A 1960s weatherboard with the original wiring still running half the house. We rewired the lot while the family stayed in, working room-by-room over eleven days.

The brief was simple: get the house off the old rubber-sheathed cable before summer. Ceramic fuses in the board, two-pin outlets in the kids' rooms, no earth on half the circuits. Classic pre-1970s build that had been patched a dozen times and never properly done.

We scoped it across two site visits — one with Dan on the tools, one with Mick walking the plan with the family. Agreed a staged approach: bedrooms first so the kids didn't lose power at night, kitchen last so the fridge stayed on until the final changeover.

Switchboard got a full replacement — new enclosure, RCBO on every circuit, clear labelling, surge protection. The meter box was shifted two metres so Ausgrid had clean access for the upgrade. We ran Cat6 back to a patch panel in the study while the walls were open — cheap to do now, expensive to retrofit later.

Every room got new GPOs, LED downlights on dimmable drivers, and interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms to the 2022 standard. Old cable pulled out, not just abandoned in the wall — we don't like leaving rubbish behind the plaster.

Eleven days on site, one day over the original quote (a joist we had to notch around added half a day). Final test and tag, compliance certificate, and a walk-through with the homeowner so she knew which breaker did what.

They worked around us, around the kids, around the dog. House felt safer the day they left.
